Job Description
This position is a key UTK HR Career Development team member, supporting a comprehensive career development program to aid in retention of UTK staff. Responsibility includes assisting employees with identifying career goals and developing a career plan, effective job search strategies, creating career development initiatives, consultation, and career coaching. The position reports to the Manager of Career Development and collaborates with colleges and departments, campus committees, and other HR team members in developing and implementing career development strategies, programs, and resources that provide appropriate, comprehensive, and timely solutions.
Responsibilities
In collaboration with the Career Development team, design, develop, implement, and market a comprehensive career development program that aligns with the university and departmental vision, mission, and strategic initiatives:
- Conduct individual and group coaching sessions for all levels of staff and track outcomes.
- Develop and lead workshops on career development topics.
- Coach staff in setting goals for career development plans.
- Identify leadership development and learning opportunities that guide staff to be successful in their career development.
- Establish tools/resources utilizing various forms of media, including podcasts/videos.
- Assist with the Career Development social media presence and monthly Career Coaches corner of the HR newsletter.
- Identify when issues discovered in coaching sessions should be elevated to the Manager of Career Development or another HR partner.
Design, implement, manage, and market comprehensive career development programs, including experiential and networking programs, that align with the university and departmental vision, mission, and strategic initiatives:
- Assist with the DYL Professional Fellows program, including recruiting host departments, communicating with current and host supervisors as well as fellows, application management, matching fellows and host departments, leading training sessions for the fellows, and assessing the effectiveness of the program, making changes when necessary.
- Assist with Connect the Dots and other networking events, including recruiting participants and facilitators, marketing and leading the event activities, and developing additional community building opportunities for staff.
- Continue developing experiential opportunities to advance the career development of staff.
Manage assessment and collaborative relationships with campus partners:
- Conduct needs assessments, establish learning outcomes, and evaluate programs to assess impact, effectiveness, and improve services/programs.
- Report on a variety of metrics to support program assessment.
- Initiate and foster relationships with HR colleagues and campus partners, including employee resource groups.
- Assist with departmental activities, events, and programs that support HR's mission.
- Other duties as assigned to support the work of the department and division.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's Degree
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years advising, coaching, counseling, teaching, and/or Human Resources experience, including successfully developing and implementing programs. Presentation skills.
- Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment visa status.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Skills to develop, implement, and manage engaging programs related to decision-making and career development
- Knowledge of coaching best practices
- Ability to create and maintain relationships with individuals at all levels of the institution
- Effective problem-solving skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of counseling sessions
Preferred Qualifications
- Education: Master's Degree
- Experience:
- Experience in Higher Education
- Experience in Career Development capacity
- Establishing metrics for data-informed decision making
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Developed skills and techniques in coaching, including coaching certification
- Career coaching experience, including the interpretation of assessments such as CliftonStrengths, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Career Interest Inventories, etc.

Compensation and Benefits
- UT market range: MR09
- Anticipated hiring range: $55,000-$60,000
