Budget Specialist
We are seeking a Budget Specialist who monitors the budgeting and finance activities for the department of Health, Safety and Environment.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Provide day-to-day maintenance of budgets based on an awareness of the status of department or unit funding sources, including most of the following: monthly account reconciliation, ongoing monitoring of expenses, processing travel expenses, coordinating procurement processes and vendor payments, coding invoices, initiating cost transfers and/or wire payments.
  • Assist in developing budgets and budget projections, based on a basic knowledge of funding sources, by performing basic calculations and analyses, generating standard reports, and applying approved processes and procedures.
  • Track and monitor revenue and expenditures to identify variances and to provide up-to-date expenditure and balance information.
  • Review and process accounting transactions and verify expenditures against approved budgets to ensure compliance with university guidelines and/or sponsor requirements and restrictions.
  • Using templates, review and assess budget patterns and project expenditures.
  • Prepare routine, standard, and ad-hoc reports for sponsoring agencies based on knowledge of existing data.
  • Assist in development and maintenance of budget monitoring systems by setting up electronic and paper files, recommending and following work flow, and suggesting process improvements.
  • Use various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate, and format data and/or reports.
  • Secondary responsibilities include assisting administrative secretary with answering the office phone and other related activities.
  • Perform other duties as needed.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • 3 years of related administrative and/or budget experience.
  • At least one year of related progressively responsible experience.
  • Knowledge of the SAP accounting system practice and implementation within the Hopkins environment desirable.


Special Knowlege, Skills & Abilities:
  • Must be proficient in Excel.
  • Also should be familiar with other Microsoft Office products.
  • Must be extremely detail oriented.
  • Candidate must have strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently under general supervision.
  • Must possess the ability to effectively interact with all levels of University employees, as well as, outside contacts.
  • Should be familiar with accounting and budgeting theory and practices.

Role/Level/Range: ATO 40/E/03/OD
Starting Salary Range: $15.41 - $21.21/hr (commensurate with experience)
