About The Position


The Director of Human Resources guides and manages the overall provision of Human Resources services and programs for the Alice Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) staff and faculty. The HR Director will draw from experience in healthcare and/or higher education to direct and develop the policies and staff of the HR office. The HR Director will promote and prioritize organizational development and customer needs while ensuring compliance with accrediting standards and best practices that align with the organization's mission, talent strategy and brand.

As a partner to clinical and nonclinical departments, the HR Director originates and leads HR practices and objectives that will provide an employee-oriented, high-performance culture that emphasizes productivity, quality, workforce development and professional achievement.

Organizational Relationships:

This position reports to the Vice President for Administration and Finance. This position leads a team of professional and para-professional staff members in the Office of Human Resources and works closely in concert with AWSOM's affiliate entities to provide leadership, support, and expertise on HR matters.

Major Responsibilities/Essential Functions Specific to the Position:

Administration


Improve operational efficiencies and effectiveness of the HR office
Coordinate and support HR related activities with staff, faculty, and clinical partners
Work in concert with AWSOM's shared services provider to leverage skills and bandwidth for the institution's ecosystem
Develop and monitor an annual budget that includes HR services, employee development and administration
Conducts ongoing study of HR policies, programs, best practices to keep AWSOM leadership informed of current trends and developments
Establishes HR departmental measurements that support the accomplishment of AWSOM's strategic goals
Develops and administers programs, procedures, and guidelines to help align the workforce with the strategic goals of AWSOM
Defines all HR training needs and programs
Establishes an in-house employee training system that addresses training needs and expectations including training needs assessment, new employee orientation and onboarding, management development and measurement of training impact

Talent Acquisition and Compensation:

Assess, modify, and implement the recruitment and retention plan for AWSOM
Ensure that AWSOM has a compliant, efficient, and effective recruitment, selection, and onboarding program with a focus on quality and customer service
Designs, directs, and manages a process of organization development that addresses issues such as succession planning, workforce development, key employee retention, organization design and change management
Routinely meets with administrators and staff to determine priorities and tasks to ensure an equitable salary increase program and provide accurate reporting of institutional use of salary increase funds
Oversees establishment of wage and salary structure, pay policies, and variable pay systems including bonuses and raises. Leads competitive market research to establish pay practices and pay bands that help to recruit and retain superior staff

Labor and Employee Relations:

Develop and launch a labor relations unit within AWSOM
Determines and recommends employee relations practices necessary to foster a positive employer-employee relationship and promote a high-level of employee morale and motivation
Oversees the development and implementation of a performance improvement process with non-performing employees
Oversees and approves management recommendations for employment terminations
Work with AWSOM leadership to establish complaint procedures and processes
Oversees the review of employee appeals through the complaint procedures
Ensures compliance with all existing governmental and labor legal and government reporting requirements, including but not limited to: Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), the Department of Labor, worker compensation, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and other related programs
Works in concert with AWSOM's General Counsel to mitigate legal exposure

Benefits Administration:

Work in concert with AWSOM's shared services provider to oversee all aspects of benefit administration including, but not limited to, PTO, leaves, insurance, employee assistance, time and attendance, fringe reporting, enrollment, onboarding and offboarding and other supportive services

Service:

Serve as an AWSOM representative to assigned internal and external committees necessary to the promotion of quality HR services to AWSOM faculty and staff
Serve as a member of a variety of local and national professional organizations such as the College and University Personnel Association or Society for Human Resource Management

Minimum Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in business administration, human resource management or related field with at least 10 years of human resource management experience
Broad knowledge and experience in employment law, compensation, organizational planning, organizational development, employee relations, safety, training, and development
Excellent interpersonal and coaching skills
Evidence of practice of superior confidentiality and discretion
Proven communications (oral and written) skills along with strong facilitative skills
Demonstrated ability to lead, develop and motivate HR staff
Strong change management and strategic planning skills
Ability to work with diverse populations and sensitive to the needs of underrepresented and minority populations

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree with 10 years of human resources management experience, including five (5) years in health care or higher education with progressively increasing responsibilities
Demonstrated experience with Workday platform
Specialized training and education in employment law and employee relations, preferred
Active affiliation with appropriate HR networks and organizations
Record of accomplishments in developing a quality, service-oriented and modern HR team

AUTHORITY AND RESPONSIBILITY:

The individual has the authority to make decisions, following established procedures and policies, and implement those decisions. The successful candidate must be able to determine priorities independently and mentor and direct the HR office team to accomplish work assignments in a reasonable time, as well as show sound judgment. This individual oversees a budget and will manage additional duties as assigned in consultation with the Vice President for Administration and Finance and Dean and CEO of AWSOM.

About Us!

Founded in 2021 by philanthropist Alice Walton, the School of Medicine will offer a medical degree-granting program that builds on conventional medicine with an inclusive, compassionate, and whole health approach. The School of Medicine embraces self-care to empower students to care for their patients and themselves and helps them rise to the health challenges of the 21st century with a focus on mental, physical, social, and emotional health. The School will have an attached clinic for training in these concepts. Currently, the School of Medicine seeks to be a national medical school with the goal of welcoming its inaugural class in 2025, pending programmatic and institutional accreditation.

Construction of the 154,000 square-foot building has begun with the goal of completing and welcoming the first class in Fall 2025, pending accreditation. AWSOM will be located east of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.
