About the Position:
The Office of Student Retention is focused on persistence and graduate rates of students, aiming to empower Titans in the process of matriculation. At first glance, professional growth and academic success are the focuses of this area, yet it is more about the relationships that are developed to foster such success. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, Tuffy's Graduation Scholars (Student Services Professional IV). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

The Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, Tuffy's Graduation Scholars (TGS) works in collaboration with the Executive Director for Retention Initiatives to integrate and deliver comprehensive student support programs and services and is an integral part of student success. The Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, TGS, designs and coordinates programs that will engage a unique population of students, promote access and retention, enhance student development, enrich the academic environment, and supports the student's pathway toward degree completion. Recommends University and college-wide student services; coordinates program student services; designs and implements student service assessment plans, including co-curricular programs and contributions to a wide variety of initiatives that support the local, division-wide, and university strategic plans; and contributes to campus and off-campus presentations and publications. Tuffy's Graduation Scholars is a baccalaureate completion program designed to increase student success and time to degree. The program is based on the CSU system Chancellor's Office Graduation Initiative and best practices to assist students in successful, timely graduation. The Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, TGS, is responsible for the recruitment/selection of students, connecting scholars to campus resources, and collaborating across campus in support of TGS' personal, academic, and professional success. The program is within the Division of Student Affairs under the direction of the Executive Director of Retention Initiatives and the Department of Assistant Deans for Student Affairs, in collaboration with the Division of Academic Affairs, Division of Information Technology, the Office of Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness, Student Success Centers/Teams, and several other campus partners. The Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, TGS, reports to the Executive Director, Retention Initiatives. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:

Bachelors degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution. Four years of professional student services work experience including experience advising students individually and in groups, as well as the analysis and resolution of complex student services problems. A masters degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, clinical psychology, social work or a job related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctoral degree from an accredited college or university and the appropriate internship or clinical training in a relevant field may be substituted for two years of professional experience.



General knowledge of the problems and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel, and fiscal management. Knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods. Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities. Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Ability to complete assignments without detailed instructions. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities and of the overall organization.


A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.


Preferred Qualifications:

Education and/or experience in communication strategies, marketing, social media campaigns, and graphic design. Grant and proposal writing, grant management, and donor relations. Experience with budget and resource management.
