This search is to fill two Payroll Specialist vacancies


The Payroll Department is part of the broader Business Services administrative support
unit for the University. The Payroll department is responsible for handling all aspects involving the processing of payroll for the campus once an individual has gained employment status from Human Resources.
This position is responsible for the processing of payroll and personnel transactions such as appointments, changes in status, leaves and separations for staff employees. Incumbent must apply knowledge of data management systems (BANNER), consult with various resources to access, enter and maintain payroll and personnel data, and validate data, identify discrepancies and errors, and calculate and reconcile variances to maintain data integrity. Due to the utilization of a Service Center, this position must exercise considerable judgment, initiative and independence to achieve results and deal with subject matter requiring a high degree of technical expertise. As a result, this position provides training, guidance and assistance to the Service Center and serves as an advanced operational resource resolving the most difficult and unusually complicated or problematic payroll and personnel related transactions for staff employees in a highly independent manner. This position also coordinates and produces payroll for all employees using a combination of laws, regulations, policies and procedures. This position is also responsible for providing backup receptionist duties for the payroll office which include phone call inquiries, general employee assistance and maintaining of all personnel record files.

Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum of one year general office experience including payroll processing. Excellent computer skills including strong keyboarding, ten-key, and accurate data entry. Ability to work in a team atmosphere with strong communication and customer service skills.
Experience with/Ability to interact with a diverse population. Minimum of one year general office experience including payroll processing. Experience with/Ability to interact with a diverse population. Three years of office experience which included two years at full performance level and experience generating documents; and
Lead work responsibility or coordination of office procedures.


Preferred Qualification:
Experience with Banner HRIS or other integrated payroll database.
Experience with PeopleAdmin.
Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer oriented and service centered attitude.
Comprehensive knowledge of federal and state laws or similar type knowledge with regards to employment and timekeeping matters.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Effective communication skills; ability to communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism to effectively handle a broad range of sensitive interpersonal situations. Demonstrated ability to interpret and consistently apply a wide variety of complex
policies and procedures. Ability to work with frequent changes in policies and procedures, under pressure of deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Strong analytical and research skills; ability to gather, evaluate, and to develop well- reasoned conclusions and recommendations. Ability to proactively assess work operations and anticipate potential problems; ability to develop and implement strategies for preventing/resolving problems.
Ability to effectively perform work of a highly sensitive and confidential nature that requires access to information. Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion, tact, and diplomacy.
Initiative in independently planning, organizing, and performing work assignments within
broadly defined parameters.
Ability to coordinate several functions and determine the relative importance of each; ability to work with a high level of productivity and accuracy/attention to detail. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
Knowledge of or ability to independently analyze software functionality through technical documents, and design and document efficient/effective work processes; ability to independently analyze software problems, test probable causes, and recommend sound solutions.
Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, online systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Effectively present information and respond to questions from a variety of audiences groups of managers, customers, and the general public.
Skilled at streamlining processes to create efficiencies when necessary.

Special Conditions
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for
occasional professional development.
Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet
special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on
an emergency basis.
