Associate Vice Chancellor for Staff Human Resources
and Chief Human Resources Officer

An R-1 research university and a member of the prestigious American Association of Universities, the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC) is an inspired, global, public research university that is internationally recognized for its research and scholarship, its undergraduate and graduate teaching, and its deep commitment to public service. United by the pursuit of social justice and environmental sustainability, the UCSC community strives to be diverse, open, purposeful, caring, just, disciplined, and celebrative, pursuing these principles in an atmosphere of personal and intellectual freedom, security, respect, civility, and mutual support. Its world-class facilities are in one of the most visually spectacular settings in higher education, a 2,000-acre redwood forest at the edge of the Pacific Ocean.

Staff Human Resources (SHR) supports the campus by propelling the university mission, engaging and developing people, empowering campus partners, building trust and teamwork, and providing excellent Human Resource services. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor of Finance, Operations and Administration, the Associate Vice Chancellor for Staff Human Resources and Chief Human Resources Officer (AVC-SHR/CHRO) is a strategic leader who provides advice and guidance to executive management in all human resource-related areas. The AVC-SHR/CHRO exercises independent judgment and decision-making authority on highly complex matters and provides strategic planning, policy formulation, and program development relating to human resource functions. The AVC-SHR/CHRO will guide the development of a talent management strategy that enhances UCSC's competitive advantage as an employer of choice, with HR policies and practices that attract, develop, and retain a highly talented workforce, champion diversity and equity, and foster a safe, inclusive workplace culture.

The AVC-SHR/CHRO leads a dedicated team of 65+ people responsible for talent acquisition, benefits administration, compensation and classification, time and attendance/ payroll, human resources business systems administration, employee and labor relations, policy, training, and professional development. In some areas of responsibility, such as labor relations, health, welfare, and retirement benefits administration, SHR oversees the process for both academic and non-academic employees. A member of the system-wide Human Resources Leadership Council, the AVC-SHR/CHRO also works with other campus units to provide complex personnel policy interpretation, labor contract administration and interpretation, and effective employee relations, among other things.

With an undergraduate degree ideally complemented by a Master's degree or certificate in a relevant field (or an equivalent combination of experience and training), the AVC-SHR/CHRO will have human resources leadership experience in a complex matrixed, unionized organization. Motivated by the university's mission and vision, the AVC-SHR/CHRO will ensure that SHR consults, serves, provides expert advice, and works collaboratively and responsively with campus and systemwide constituents. Applying impeccable judgment and unquestionable integrity, the AVC-SHR/CHRO will display diligence in resolving complex challenges, exercise transparent communication and diplomacy skills, and provide the highest levels of strategic insight. This is an opportunity to develop a team, programs, and supporting systems to deliver best-practice human resources services to a thriving, growing campus community that strives to be diverse, open, purposeful, caring, just, disciplined, and celebrative.
