Position Summary and Responsibilities
Reporting to the AVP for Human Resources, the Benefits Manager is a key administrator in the Human Resources department. The Benefits Manager will provide leadership and daily supervision of all benefits programs at Vassar, including health and welfare, retirement, wellness and leave of absence plans, programs and vendors. The Benefits Manager will use an innovative and inclusive approach to administering benefits programs that will allow Vassar to attract, retain, engage and motivate its employees by ensuring our programs are inclusive, innovative, cost-effective, efficient, competitive, and in compliance with legal requirements. The Benefits Manager will supervise the Benefits Coordinator.

The Benefits Manager will be required to be on campus full-time for the first two months of training and then may be approved to telework for a maximum of two days per week. For more information on Vassar's telework policy, click here.
Position responsibilities:
  • Administers employee benefit programs, which may include retirement plans, leave policies, and insurance policies such as health, life, and disability.
  • Select benefit vendors and oversee enrollment, renewal, and delivery of benefits to employees. This includes managing the annual open enrollment period and the College's Benefits Fair.
  • Monitors government regulations and market trends to ensure benefit programs are current, competitive, and compliant. Reports necessary or suggested changes to College leadership and trustees.
  • Supports management's decision-making process by analyzing benefit options, conducting cost analysis, and predicting future costs.
  • Supplies employees with documents related to enrolling, maintaining and understanding their benefits coverage, and assists employees with resolving claims issues.
  • Communicates with benefit providers and vendors to ensure services are supplied according to agreement.
  • Responsible for managing the systems and technology in support of the benefit plans and employee records. Works closely with Payroll, HRIS, and CIS to ensure accurate and efficient processing of enrollment and benefits activity.
  • Conducts budgeting and financial analysis of employee benefit programs to ensure adequate estimates, forecasts, and calculations of expenditures in benefits for budget planning and tracking.
  • Maintains up-to-date plan documents for all benefit plans.
  • Organizes the preparation of reports and applications required by law to be filed with federal and state regulatory agencies.
  • Has oversight of Worker's Compensation, Disability Management, all other authorized leaves and absences including but not limited to COVID-19 quarantine leaves, FMLA, NY Paid Family Leave, Maternity, Parental Leaves, etc.
  • Reconciliation of benefit accounts for Accounting Services and auditing purposes, including journal entries as needed.


Qualifications
Required skills and experience:
  • 6+ years of experience in benefits design, implementation, administration, and compliance.
  • 3+ years of experience managing and mentoring benefits staff is desired.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of Benefits, Retirement and Medical Leaves Administration practices, laws, and trends.
  • Familiarity with the academic environment and higher education is helpful.


Education/Certification:
  • Bachelors degree required, Masters degree in human resources or other relevant discipline preferred.
Travel Requirements:
  • Some travel for training and informational updates may be required.
