Job Overview

The University Staff Ombudsperson (USO) serves as a neutral trusted resource and confidential vehicle for informal resolution of concerns of the Staff/AAP community, operating under the principles of "confidentiality, impartiality, informality and independence."

The USO acts as an independent, confidential, and impartial resource available to all staff and AAP employees. As well, they serve as an advocate for fairness and aids in finding and providing information and answers to concerns and questions regarding university policies, procedures, processes, and resources; makes referrals to other appropriate resources; and offer guidance and facilitation in the resolution of concerns and critical situations. It is not the role of the USO to advocate for members of the campus community, nor does this role serve as a substitute for formal disputes or concerns otherwise addressed by the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity and Affirmative Action (IDEAA) or Human Resources.

In keeping with Georgetown University's Jesuit values of integrity, respect, diversity and inclusiveness, the USO supports and promotes an inclusive and equitable campus community in alignment with the university's mission vision and values. A critical campus leader, they provide impartial, informal, independent resolution services to the staff and AAP community; and are responsible for program administration; collaboration across campus to establish priorities, goals, and objectives; and for developing outreach activities and training on dispute resolution, mediation and communication.

The USO facilitates communication and assists parties in reaching mutually acceptable agreements to find fair and equitable solutions to concerns.

The USO functions independently with respect to case handling and issue management, and reports to the Chief Operating Officer for administrative and budgetary purposes. The USO supervises an administrative specialist who provides functional administrative oversight including the initial intake process.

The USO provides regular updates to campus leadership and an annual report to identify key trends and areas of concern, including recommendations for changes to university policies and procedures.

They abide by the International Ombuds Association's Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics and operate under the following fundamental principles:

Work Interactions

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer for administrative and budgetary purposes, the University Staff Ombudsperson functions independently with respect to case handling, issue management, and services provided; maintains strict confidentiality to the extent feasible and lawful; and provides a service to the university that is committed to inclusion, fairness, and equity.

They supervise an administrative specialist who provides functional administrative oversight including the initial intake process and operates within the same parameters and ideals.

The USO is a highly skilled, analytical problem solver, adept at maintaining neutrality, confidentiality and acts independently in thoughts and actions. While maintaining confidentiality of communications with inquirers, they also maintain direct lines of communication with university leadership, regularly reporting aggregated, de-identified data to ensure the university is informed of the Ombudsperson's work.

In their practice, the USO promotes organizational growth through improvements to policies, systems, and services, and helps identify important themes, patterns, or systemic issues of concern relevant to campus culture and climate; and enhance our system of service and analysis in alignment with Georgetown's mission, vision and values.

Qualifications
  • Master's degree
  • Seven+ years of relevant experience utilizing alternative dispute resolution practices and skills in resolution of conflicts
  • Five years of professional work experience in areas of conflict resolution, as an Ombuds in a professional workplace, or in a closely related position
  • Experience incorporating restorative justice practices, nonviolent communication skills, and/or social justice conflict resolution strategies into one's practice
  • An expert knowledge of the appropriate role of the Ombudsperson
  • Expert interpersonal communication skills to work effectively with a broad range of diverse populations within a complex and multi-layered organization, including effective listening, discernment, empathy, and sensitivity skills
  • Excellent skills in mediation and in developing effective options for dispute resolution


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's or other advanced degree or advanced certificate in mediation, other conflict or dispute resolution, organizational psychology, higher education, counseling, or related fields
  • Professional work experience in the areas of conflict resolution, as an Ombuds in a professional workplace, or in a closely related position in a university setting
  • A successful history of working collaboratively to build and sustain highly effective and positive relationships at all organizational levels
  • Documented evidence of progressive professional experience in a leadership capacity
  • An understanding of The International Ombuds Association's professional code of ethics and standards of practice
